Play Online Craps

Craps is a game that was long associated with the upper classes of society. Over time the game became popular to dice players in all walks of life, and with the introduction of online casinos, it can now be played in the comfort of your own home! The game of craps is an exciting one, and while the game itself is a game of luck, and the dice will be what they will be, there is definitely the chance to place better wagers in order to give yourself the best chance of winning.

For those players that are new to the game, it is certainly worth trying out craps in the fun play mode. After becoming familiar with the game, it can then be played in the Real Money version that is available.

History of Craps

While the early history and origins of most casino games is somewhat unclear, craps history can be traced back to the game of Hazard, after which it developed into the game that we play today. Hazard was mentioned as ‘crabs’ in the days that the Canterbury Tales were written by Geoffrey Chaucer. The author lived from 1342 to 1400. The lowest possible throw in the game Hazard was known as crabs, which is most likely the reason we call the game ‘craps’ today.

Hazard went from the working classes of England to become a game played by noblemen in the 17th century, adding to its popularity. The game moved from England to France, and was called crabs by the French. The game later went to America with the English on the Mayflower, although many believe that the game also came to America with the French who had settled in the colony of Acadia, and later traveled to Louisiana where it was known as creps or crebs, that later became the ‘craps’ we know today.

The game was later simplified and today we play the game according to rules that were adapted by John H. Winn in the 1900s that added in the don’t pass bets and made some changes to the layout of the craps table.

Game Rules

Craps is played with a pair of standard dice with numbers from one to six. The dice are rolled and the player needs to place a bet based on the outcome of the dice. The first throw creates the point number. After this, the dice are thrown a second time, and the winning bets are paid out.

The Pass Line Bet and the Don’t Pass Line Bet are placed at the beginning of the game. The Pass Line Bet wins if the come out throw is either 7 or 11, and it is lost if the come out throw is 2, 3, or 12. The Don’t Pass Line Bet is exactly the opposite, with a win on the totals of 2, 3, and 12, and a loss on the numbers 7 or 11.

The Point Number is determined if the initial roll of the dice is equal to 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, or 10. The dice are then rolled again, and the Pass Line Bet wins if the point number is rolled first, however, if the number 7 is rolled first, the Pass Line Bet loses.

There are a number of other bets that can be placed when playing craps, such as the Place Bets, Big 6 or Big 8 Bets, Field Bets, Odds Bets, Proposition Bets, Hardways Bets, a wager on a Seven, and a wager on an 11, the Ace Deuce Bet, the Aces or Boxcars Bet, the Any Craps Bet, or the Horn Bet. Many of these bets come with a high house edge. The bets are paid out according to the predetermined pay table.

Strategy and Tips

While the game of craps is a game of chance, which means that there are no strategies as such that can be used to increase the odds of winning, there are definite steps that players can take to improve their odds of coming out on top.

  • Learn About Craps Bets: Since there are a large number of bets available that come with differing odds, players should know and understand all the bets that are available in the game before making betting decisions. Understanding which bets will ultimately be more lucrative will help players decide whether they wish to play more carefully, which is certainly recommended, or whether they wish to try out some of the bets that come with a high house edge, which are not recommended, although some players enjoy the excitement of playing some of these bets.
  • Check Out the Free Odds Bet: This bet can only be placed when the Pass Line Bet has been placed. The Free Odds Bet is based on true odds, which means that it does not have a house edge.
  • Play Free Craps Games: Players who are new to craps should play the game first in the free fun mode of the game. This version of the game will give players the chance to try out the various wagers and see how they are played without risking any hard-earned money. After players understand the various bets that are available, they can then return to funded craps games.
  • Set Yourself Limits: As with all games that are played for Real Money, players should make sure to set limits both for the length of a gaming session, and the amount of funds that can be wagered in a single gaming session, or in a single day. Setting fund limits is often known as loss limits, which means that if you didn’t win, you will not lose more than an amount that you decided on before beginning play. Players should stick to these self-imposed limits in order to stay in control of their gaming experience.
